Prior to the parliamentary elections of Afghanistan in September 2010, EQUALITY for Peace and Development (EPD) raised awareness on women’s political participation. Through this project, EPD developed four TV and Radio commercials in Dari and Pashto based on specific verses of the Qu’ran that are related to women’s political participation. The spots were aired on seven TV channels and seven Radio channels for one week before the parliamentary election.
Outcome
The commercials were well received because they provided specific information on women’s political rights according to Islam. This is important as the Islam is often misinterpreted and used as an excuse to exclude women from political processes.
